Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894-1941 : "Unseen Cinema: Early American Avant-Garde Film 1894- 1941" reveals little-known accomplishments of American filmmakers working in the United States and abroad from the invention cinema until World War II and offers an innovative and often controversial view of experimental film as a product of avant-garde artists, of professional directors and of amateur moviemakers working collectively and as individuals at all levels of film production. Many of the films have not been available since their creation, some have never been screened in public, and almost all have been unavailable in copies as good as these until now. Sixty of the world's leading film archive collections cooperated with Anthology Film Archives to bring this long-neglected period of film back to life for modern audiences. Featured Films Include: "Annabelle Dances And Dances;" "Early Superimpositions;" "Diana The Huntress;" "The Soul Of Cypress," "Looney Lens: Pas De Deaux;" "Oramunde;" "Hands;" "Joie De Vivre;" "Dada;" "Stars And Stripes;" "Dance Macabre;" "Peer Gynt;" "The House With Closed Shutters;" "Suspense;" "Moonland;" "...

"First Name: ...

Barefoot Adventure (Full Frame) : Follow the Rollicking, "Barefoot Adventurers" in Full Color thru Hawaii & California. By 1960 I had the making of my surf films down to a science, which was, basically, work my guts out. If the film was done right it looked effortless. People would say, "Boy, making that movie must have been a lot of fun." Somehow they'd be oblivious to the fact that I'd spent twelve hours a day for the last four months in an editing room and had skin the color of a man who's been locked in a closet for six years. Getting these old films ready for video release brought back a lot of those memories. Like my other surf movies, the original elements of "Barefoot Adventure" - film, narration, music - lay in bits and pieces in my attic. Most of the film had been taken apart for use in other projects. Weeks were spent opening unmarked film cans and viewing old surfing footage in search of missing shots. The shots, once found, were often held together by paper tape which, after 30 years, had turned to rock and fossilized onto the film Removing the tape meant soaking the end of each shot in film cleaner for ten to t...

Skeleton Crew (Widescreen) : A remote mental institution next to the Russian border was shut down by the police in the early 70s. Dr. Andersson made a series of snuff films using his patients. The Doctor filmed all the murders in 8mm and started calling himself the Auteur. 30 years later a small American film crew has arrived in Finland to shoot a horror movie about the massacre. The movie's director, Steven, is engaged in his first feature with his DoP Darius and gaffer from LA. The leading actress is a Finnish rising star Lisa, who's dreaming about Hollywood. Dr. Andersson is played by a famous B-movie actor with a big ego. Everything is going according to plan until two Finnish sound guys discover something evil hidden in the basement: the original snuff films shot by the Auteur. Steven is stimulated by the raw and brutal snuff film material and starts to rewrite the script. The scenes are not real enough. Everything changes when he finds the Auteur's 8mm camera. Waterlogged (Full Frame) : By 1962, I'd spent five years full-time making surf films, one per year. I'd shoot during the fall and winter, edit during the spring and show the complete film during the summer. There was never enough time. I felt if I could take two years to make a film maybe I could make something "special". Something special, however, would cost more money to produce than my other films had grossed. To allow myself the extra time and money, we took the best 90 minutes from my four previous films and made "Waterlogged". That gave us the freedom to make our special film. The result was called "The Endless Summer." It did ok. Sometimes when sitting out in the line-up, somebody will paddle up to me and vividly recall parts from my old movies. Phil Edwards surfing in his flowered trunks; Pat Curren, Byron Kough and Peter Cole riding Waimea; Jose Angel doing a barrel roll without his board at sunset; Del Cannon diving off Waimea Falls. A lot of the things they remember, I don't. "Are you sure that was in one of my films?" "Yeaah! Hey, I saw 'Waterlogged' seven times!" It's neat these people have fond memorie...

Ultimate Film Noir Collection, The : Film noir - literally "black film" - is Hollywood's moody vision of a dark, shadowy, smoky underworld populated by beautiful-but-deadly dames and the regular Joes who fall for them. These films are literally black in that they often take place at night or in the shadows - or both. But they are black in other ways, too: Shady characters with no redeeming or "light" qualities; likeable people who mean well but are pulled into the dark world of murder and mayhem; and plots that focus primarily on the darker aspects of man's nature. Although films noir continue to be produced today, the heyday of these low-budget, high-tension pictures was from the early 1940's to the mid-1950's. Here are ten classic films noir that set the tone for countless "black films" that followed in their echoing, unsettling footsteps. "Scarlet Street" - A mild-mannered, henpecked bank cashier and amateur painter falls for a pretty face who figures he's a rich and famous artist, leading to his being taken advantage of by her greedy and scheming boyfriend. "Detour" - A Manhattan night-club piano player hitchhikes to Hollyw...

Lost Horizon : Ronald Colman and Jane Wyatt star in this lavishly-produced classic about the enchanted paradise of Shangri-La where time stands still. After nearly 50 years, Frank Capra's timeless masterpiece, "Lost Horizon" (based on the best-selling novel by James Hilton) was restored to its original length of 132 minutes in 1986. The film, which was widely circulated among the armed services during World War II, was cut 22 minutes after its initial release in 1937 to reflect the wartime perception of the Chinese, and to tone down the film's pacifism. Film historian Robert Gitt conducted nearly 13 years of detective work tracking down the lost footage. With extraordinary art direction, the set of Shangri-La is considered the largest ever built in Hollywood, winning designer Stephan Goosson an Academy Award ("Lost Horizon" won two 1937 Academy Awards: Art Direction-Set Design and Film Editing). Furthermore, the budget for the picture was staggering and cost almost four times the amount of any Columbia film at the time; an equivalent cost of approximately $30-$40 million today. A box office blockbuster, "L...
